Golden Physicians PCP Spotlight – Dr. Rocio Flores

March 21, 2024

Dr. Rocio Flores, MD sees herself more as a teacher than a doctor, treating each of her patients like a member of her family. Dr. Flores recognizes a patient’s health is “80% what the individual does and 20% of what she does,” so each time a patient sees Dr. Flores she makes it a point to educate them on the ways they can improve their personal health.

Fluent in both Spanish and English, Dr. Flores says she normally gives her patients three homework assignments, from a range of manageable diet and exercise goals to help the patient live their healthiest. These include items like cooking more meals at home, eating more vegetables, and getting in physical exercise outside. Dr. Flores discovers what motivates her patients, be it independence while aging, serving as a caretaker for a loved one, or staying healthy for grandchildren, and uses that motivation to cheer her patients on to making manageable changes in their daily activities to increase their quality of life.

When asked if she has always wanted to be a doctor, Dr. Flores replied with an astounding yes, since the age of five. Dr. Flores was born in Lima, Peru and spent her childhood and teenage years between the US and Peru. After graduating high school in Peru, Dr. Flores enrolled in the University of South Florida for medical school, and completed her residency at Emory University in Atlanta. Wanting to be closer to her sister, Dr. Flores moved to San Diego and began practicing medicine in 1999. When asked about her love for her profession, Dr. Flores does not hesitate to share that this is the right field for her. “Being a Doctor is not for the faint of heart, it takes a lot of hard work to be a good doctor” Dr. Flores expresses her commitment to her patients and profession by making herself available to her patients, who she views like members of her family.

Dr. Flores loves calling San Diego home and the diverse community she is a part of. She is very proud of her son who is forging his own path in Medicine, currently as a Pre-Med student at University of Southern Florida. Dr. Flores looks forward to continuing to provide quality care for her patients for years to come, and stays active with the goal of hiking, biking, and traveling when she retires. When she is not seeing patients or staying active outside, Dr. Flores loves to read, especially murder mystery, fantasy, and science fiction novels.
